Son of Alexander and Lulu (Swank) Butcher; born August 24, 1897 in Jay County, Indiana. Occupation: Laborer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in August 1917 at Lima, Ohio. Sent to Camp Sheridan, Alabama; transferred to Camp Hancock, Georgia; assigned to Company L, 38th Infantry, 3rd Division. Embarked for overseas in Spring of 1918. Participated in Aisne Defensive, Champagne, Marne Defensive, Aisne-Marne Offensive. Killed in action on July 23, 1918 while crossing Marne River. Died at age 20 years, 11 months. Time in service: 11 months.
