A Fitzgerald, Ga., native, he lived in Waycross most of his life and began his career with the postal service in 1936. He was appointed Waycross Postmaster in 1952 by President Harry Truman. He retired in 1978 after 42 years of service. He was a longtime member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a life member of Waycross Elks Lodge, a member of the Dutch Treat Club and a licensed airplane pilot.
The son of the late James H. and Lottie Mae Schaffer Barnes, he is survived by his wife, Margaret Estelle Lea Barnes; sons and daughters-in-law, Norment A. and Paula Barnes Jr. of McMinnville, Tom and Janice Barnes of Waycross; daughters and sons-in-law, June and Bert James, Susan and Mack Strickland, all of Waycross; brother, Pat Barnes of Sebring, Fla.; grandchildren and their spouses, Norment A. and Julie Barnes III of Duluth, Ga., Holly and John Jordan of Nashville, Melany and Michael Crothers of McMinnville, Paul Barnes of Suwanee, Ga., Kevin and Jenny Barnes, Barry and Melissa Barnes, Michael and Jessica James, Jeremy James, Brian and Heather Hodge, Jennifer Simpson, Jake Simpson and Stacie Strickland, all of Waycross, April and John McNeil of St. Mary's, Ga., and Chris Strickland of Valdosta; nine great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Services were held Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church with burial following at Oakland Cemetery.
