Officer Meehan and Officer Stella Donahue were killed when Officer Donahue lost control of their patrol vehicle on Roosevelt Boulevard and Sandyford road (near Cottman Avenue) and struck a tree. The two had been investigating the behavior of teenagers in the Pennypack Circle section and were on their way to the Linton's restaurant at Cottman and Roosevelt Blv. when the accident happened. Both officers were pronounced at 5:25 a.m. upon arrival at Nazareth Hospital.
Officer Meehan, a seven-year veteran of the force, was a Navy veteran of World War II where he served as a gunner's mate on a merchantman.
Officer Meehan was survived by his wife of two years.
