Mr. James Clifford Scott, age 92, of Shelbyville, entered into eternal rest Saturday, February 21, 2009, at his home after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be 11 AM Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at Fairlane Church of Christ. Geoff Giesemann and Russ Countess will officiate, with burial to follow in Wilkes Cemetery in Culleoka, Tennessee.
Visitation will be 4-8 PM Monday at Fairlane church of Christ.
He was born March 31, 1916, in Culleoka, to the late Allen Burnley Scott and Bessie Bell Matthews Scott. He was a retired Educator with the State of Tennessee and had a long and impressive career. He was a graduate of Culleoka High School in 1935, and a graduate of Middle Tennessee College. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force serving from 1942 -1946, and in World War II. He married Jean Thaxton on November 11, 1944 and they were together until her passing in January 2008.
His teaching career began in with the fourth grade at Andrews Elementary School from 1937 until 1940. He was then Principal at Highland Park Elementary School from 1940 – 1942. He was principal at Whitthorne Jr. High from 1947-1958, principal at White County High 1958-1959, and principal at Marshall County High School from 1959-1966. He then became principal at Shelbyville Central High School where he served from 1966 until 1975. In 1979, he retired from Tennessee Preparatory School, bringing an end to a career in education than endured 42 1/2 years.
He held interim positions as Superintendent of Tennessee Children's Home, Principal at Columbia Academy, and Principal at Eakin Primary School.
He loved to work on the farm and did so most all of his life. He owned and managed J & J Farms from 1967-2002.
He was past president of the Education Associations in Marshall, Maury, and Bedford Counties. He was also past president of the Bedford County Retired Teachers Association. At one time he was a member of the Rotary Club in Lewisburg, Sparta, and has been active in the Shelbyville Rotary Club since 1966.
He was an active member of the Tennessee Farm Bureau in Marshall and Bedford Counties.
He was a member of the Church of Christ since 1932, where he served as a Deacon of Church Street Church in Lewisburg. He became an Elder for the old Main Street Church of Christ in 1972, and was still active in his church, Fairlane Church of Christ.
He is survived by a son, Ronald Thaxton Scott, and his wife, Kathy, of Rockvale, and a daughter, Jeanie Elizabeth Raymond, and her husband Glenn, of Lewisburg; a brother, Donald Matthews Scott, of Columbia and a sister, Dr. Margaret Butler, of Roswell, Georgia; four grandchildren, Josh Fitzgerald, Josh Scott, Jordan Scott, and Hannah Scott; three great grandchildren, Isabella Fitzgerald, Jackson Scott, and Cohen Scott.
