New Holstein—A 60-year old New Holstein man, apparently despondent over the death of his wife, took his own life at his home at 2228 Jefferson St. at about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday. Calumet County Coroner LeRoy Hughs said Arno W. Matzen shot himself in the left temple with a .22 caliber rifle after coming home from work at the Kestell Furniture Co. in New Holstein. His daughter found him about 1:30.
Mr. Matzen was born in the town of New Holstein on May 4, 1903, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Matzen. He married Marcella Konz May 7, 1923. She died Feb. 6, 1946. He married Mrs. Verna Woelfel Sept 30, 1950 and she died Dec. 26, 1962. Mr. Matzen farmed in the New Holstein area.
Surviving are two sons, Francis of Milwaukee and Warren of Sheboygan Falls; two daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Marion) Boardmann of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Miss Shirley Matzen at home and a brother, Raymond of Milwaukee.
Funeral services will be held at the Erbe-Hoffmann Funeral home with the Rev. Charles A. Koch, pastor of St. Johns United Church of Christ officiating. Burial will be made in the New Holstein cemetery.
