Bessie Hickok married William Pettinger and had one daughter, Gertrude. (The following is taken from Barbara Matthews' THE PETTINGER FAMILY): "...Bessie is mentioned in the April-June 1877 issue of The Plattsburgh Sentinel, in a note that suggests she had already left Ausable by 1877:
'Ellenburgh Centre schools commence Monday. Teachers, Miss Emma Goodspeed, the upper school; and Mrs. Bess Pettenger (sic), the lower room.'
"Bessie (Hickok) Pettinger and her eight year-old daughter Gertrude are on the 1880 census, with Bessie listed as a teacher. Since the column for Bessie's marital status is 'Widowed/Divorced,' we cannot tell if William died or if the couple divorced.
"If William died, he did so sometime between the 1870 and 1880 census. Bessie and Gertrude are listed as boarders at the home of Joseph and Jane Pettinger in the town of Champlain, Clinton County, New York.
"...One of the interesting questions about Bessie, Gertrude, and William Edgar Pettinger is 'What happened to William?' I've been unable to find him in any of the area cemeteries and haven't found any information about his death. Since Upper Jay's Mountain View Cemetery has such a nice monument for the Pettinger family, I'm surprised that William isn't inscribed on that monument. Another place I might expect to find William would be the Essex Cemetery, since his mother, Emeril (Collins) Pettinger and her family are buried there, along with his uncle, George Pettinger."

April 13, 1881, Bessie married Charles Gale (son of John Gale and Phebe Dominey Gale) of Beekmantown. In 1885, they had a daughter, Blanche Edith. A teacher himself, Charles Gale was a teacher, after removing from Beekmantown lived in Ellenburgh he was School Commissioner of the Second or Northern District of Clinton County from 1860-63. He passed away on December 9, 1891.

April 18, 1899, Bessie married Marvin Brown. Known to readers of the Plattsburgh Sentinel for 36 years under the nom de plume "Dick Dole," he passed away July 2, 1908.
BESSIE'S PASSING:
Her obituary reads:
"On Dec. 14, 1916, Mrs. Bessie Brown passed from this life at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W.B. Carpenter, at Alburgh, Vt., where she had resided for the past three years, at the age of 75 years, having been born in Wilmington, Essex Co., in 1841.
"While she had been in poor health for some time, and more especially during the past year, she was always cheerful and in October came to Owls Head, where she remained for several weeks, returning to Alburgh just five weeks previous to her death, and was about the house until less than an hour before she passed away, having made the remark at different times during the day that she had not felt so well for years as on that day. The end came peacefully at the last. As rest comes to a tired child weary with its play, she simply remarked that she would 'lie down to sleep for a few moments.'
"The funeral services were held at the M.E. church at Ellenburg Center, where she had been a faithful member for several years, Christian since early girlhood when she first united with the church at Keeseville, N.Y.
She leaves to mourn the loss of a mother's untiring devotion, two daughters, Mrs. W.B. Carpenter, of Alburgh, Vt., and Mrs. H.R. Glazier of Owls Head, besides two brothers F.M. Hickok, of Adrian, Mich., and C.W. Hickok, of Riverside, Calif., and several grandchildren.
Bessie is buried in Riverside Cemetery at Ellenburg Center with the simple inscription of "Mother" on her grave.
