Waite grew up in rural Kansas, next to the youngest of the five sons of Joseph Irwin Taylor and Margaret Electa (Hull) Taylor. He married Mabel Havlin in Norton, Kansas, on January 28, 1907. The following year they moved to Yakima. They later moved to Prosser where he farmed and also was a rural mail carrier.

After his retirement from the Post Office, he was a bailiff for the Benton County Superior Court until a few months before his death.

Waite and Mabel were members of the Prosser Methodist Church. Waite was a long-time member of the Rotary Club and maintained a perfect attendance record. Even when out of town, he would find the local Rotary Club to visit; however, his wife and daughter were not always thrilled with having to find something to do in a strange town while he met with the local Rotarians!
