KINGS MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Laura Mauney Houser, 95, of Covenant Village, Gastonia, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009.

She was born on April 4, 1914, granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jacob S. Mauney (Founding Father, City of Kings Mountain) and daughter of the late Mr. Dorris Carl Mauney and Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth "Sadie" Fisher Mauney.

Dedicated to community service, assisting institutions and individuals, Laura was a civic-minded, benevolent, committed visionary and motivator, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She was a lifelong member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, serving as call committee member, Lutheran Church Women vice-president and president and altar guild chairman.

For the City of Kings Mountain she served as a two-term Woman's Club president, planning board member (25+ years), Centennial Celebration Committee member, Headquarters Committee chairman, major contributor to "Tracks in Time" ? History of Kings Mountain, council of the Garden Clubs treasurer, Garden Club president, annual Floral Fair chairman and previous trustee, "Thursday Afternoon Book Club" president and Library Board treasurer (34+ years).

Her honorable mentions are D.A.R. member, Sadie Mills Inc. director, Board of Trustees - Kings Mountain Hospital (10+ years) and named Sesquicentennial Outstanding Woman of Cleveland County. Giving the best service for the citizens of Kings Mountain and Cleveland County, Jacob S. Mauney Memorial Library remains a shining tribute to the spirit of Laura Mauney Houser. The line of her life was a distinctive one. Her energies knew no limits in achieving the professional, cultural or educational goals of the agency to which she was committed.

In addition to her grandparents and parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Henry Houser; brothers, Carl F. Mauney and Joseph S. Mauney; and grandson, George Andrew Hudson.

She is survived by her daughters, Shirley Houser Allen Bimrose of Kings Mountain and Beth Houser McIntyre and husband, Lee, of Gastonia; grandchildren, Laura Ann Johnson and husband, Sam, of Jamestown, Betsy McIntyre Hurst and husband, Brad, of Gastonia and Trey McIntyre and wife, Kori, of Fort Mill, S.C.; and great-grandchildren, Hannah Hayes Brinsfield of Jamestown, Sarah Katherine Hayes of Charlotte, Lauralee Hurst and Mary Kate Hurst of Gastonia.

The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those who helped in the special care of our Mama Laura, especially Boots LaRocca.
