Policeman Knox and Policeman George R. Dingwall were shot and killed in a shootout with a man who had shot up the Philadelphia Rapid Transit power shops at 13th and Mt. Vernon streets, then emptied two pistols at his pursuers before being clubbed unconscious. Policeman Knox was an eight-year veteran.
Officer Knox was married to Catherine Naulty on May 16, 1905. His father was John Owen Knox (1849 - 1898). His wife lived from April 10, 1888 to 1936 and died in South Jersey. Their son Edward Joseph Knox lived from 1909 to 1952. He married Frances Marie Wood (1911 - 1990) at Corpus Christi Church in Philadelphia. The couple had three children.
Officer Knox was interred January 29, 1919.
