Dr. Gerald Chester Hill is remembered by many residents of Riverdale as a country doctor who made house calls and was flexible with his fees. Dr Hill was a Riverdale physician for 33 years. Many times after delivering babies, he would ask mothers what they could afford to pay him.
It might be $35, sometimes it was nothing. He was known to trade services with people. His fee for tonsillectomies was $25 and office calls for more than half his career were $2.50. When he retired in 1978 he was charging $12.00 for office calls.
He once said that medical school never prepared him for being a country doctor.
Dr Hill maintained an office in his home so patients, who he referred to as his friends, could call on him nights and weekends.
He was born in Riverdale where his parents were farmers.
After high school he worked as a carpenter for Fresno County and farmed on the side. He earned a biology degree at Fresno State University where he play football and took premed courses.
Dr Hill graduated from Loma Linda University and served in the Navy with the U.S. Public Health Service.
He was discharged but recalled back in Public Health Service and served as Medical Director at Alcatraz. One of his patients was Robert Stroud, the birdman of Alcatraz.
