James A. Smith, known as Brushy Creek Jim, died at his home in Ward 2, Friday, January 21st, at the age of 74 years.

Mr. Smith, a son of Timothy Smith, was a native of Winn Parish and served as a member of Winn Parish School Board for sixteen years, elected in the latter 80s and continuing until some time in the 90s.

He served as deacon in the Union Baptist Church for 40 years and has been a member of the Masonic Lodge for 40 years. He was initiated in the Eastern Star Lodge No. 151 F. & A. M. and at the time of his death was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Sikes.

Through his connection in religious and fraternal circles Mr. Smith became a community leader and friends from far and near went to him for advice in matters both spiritual and material.

He was thrice married, first to Miss White and to this union one daughter was born and is now living, the wife of R. Porter, of Ward two; second to Mrs. Lucinda Gilmore and one daughter, who is now Mrs. M. Marsh was born to this marriage and third to Miss Della Jordan, who with their two daughters, Misses Odelle and Lorena Smith, ages 17 and 15 respectively and one sister, Mrs. Baxter Porter, now survive him.

On last Saturday afternoon, Mr. Smith was buried with Masonic honors in Pleasant Hill Cemetery on a spot which he selected two years ago, Rev. J. A. McMurray conducting the funeral services.
