Carol Jean Dero, 79, of Glenwood, passed away peacefully in her home on Saturday, March 14, with her family at her side, concluding her long battle with cancer.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 20, at Glenwood Lutheran Church with the Rev. Krista Lee officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. and resume at the church on Friday, one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Glenwood. Arrangements are with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Carol Jean Geiwitz was born in Minneota on May 14, 1929, to Peter and Hansina (Johansen) Geiwitz. She graduated from Minneota High School as the salutatorian of her senior class and then went on to St. Olaf College, where she earned her RN degree from Fairview Hospital in 1950. If ever there was a match between a person's virtues and vocation, it would have been Carol Jean and nursing. Nursing gave Carol a means to reach out and care for others in their time of need.
Carol Jean Geiwitz married her true love, Donald Emil Dero, on October 5, 1951. Even the minister wondered if the marriage would last, as she was the Lutheran daughter of the Ford dealer and he the Catholic son of the Chevrolet family; but theirs was a marriage of true soul mates.
As parents, Carol and Don provided a loving home where they were as devoted to their family as they were to each other. The family spent summers at Lake Cochran, where Carol was the everlasting lifeguard, teaching everyone to swim and water ski.
The Dero family moved to Glenwood in 1969, and immediately began interweaving themselves into the community. As in Minneota, the Glenwood community provided the Deros the opportunity to do all that they loved: golf, dance, sing, entertain and play cards. Carol became the Director of Nursing at Lakeview Care Center, and later worked at the Glenwood Hospital, having previously held nursing positions at Weiner Memorial Hospital in Marshall and the Canby Hospital. She volunteered for Hospice, VFW and American Legion Auxiliary and was a member at Glenwood Lutheran Church, where she frequently volunteered and was in the bell choir for several years.
After Don passed away in 1993, Carol stayed active with her dear friends, Maurine Fjoslein and Vi Miller. Nicknamed the three musketeers, they rarely missed a function at the Glenwood Central Square, where they were honored as Patrons of the Arts. In addition, Carol went to great efforts to attend the countless activities of her six children and 14 grandchildren. She attended as many games, recitals, golf and tennis matches, graduations and weddings as possible. Carol enjoyed all sports and it wasn't unusual for her to have several games on at once. Only a game of cards or dice or a visit from a friend or family member could trump her dedication to watching her Minnesota teams. Carol always had the door open and the coffee ready with her famous Norwegian egg coffee for any who paid a visit. In the summer she enjoyed sharing her raspberries, at Christmas her Belgian cookies, and the rest of the time an endless supply of peppermints.
Comfortable in her housecoat and slippers, Carol set aside time everyday to read, which she loved. An intelligent and supportive woman, she was an exemplary mother, loving all of her children equally and accepting them as unique individuals. Despite the complications she faced with her illness, Carol kept her faith strong, her spirits high and maintained her sense of humor throughout her life. She was truly an exceptional person and will be greatly missed.
Carol is survived by her children, Susan (Steve) Vold of Billings, Mont., Doug (Jill) Dero of Hayden Lake, Idaho, David (Debra) Dero of Strasburg, Colo., Nancy Dero of Walker, Michael (Jackie) Dero of Naples, Fla., and Jane (Randy) Fauskee of Glenwood; 14 grandchildren, Jason Christman, Matthew Dero, Karli Vold (Brent Taylor), Justin Dero, Abbie (Andrew) Holte, Michael Dero, Kristen Dero, Dylan (Alicia) Christman, Nolan Lund, Alison Vold, Ryan Roberts, Emery Lund, Taylor Roberts and McKensie Fauskee; two great-grandchildren, Kaleb Roberts and Carson Holte; and her brother, James Geiwitz (Renee Woodson) of Saanichton, B.C.
