Funeral services for Mr. Jerry Walker Bishop, Jr., 77, of West Monroe, La. will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday April 27, 2009 in the chapel of Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe, La. with Rev. Rick Crandall officiating. Interment will be at Zoar Methodist Church Cemetery near Chatham, La.

Mr. Bishop was born in Anniston, Alabama on October 21, 1931 and died at his residence in West Monroe, La, on April 24, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents Jerry Walker Bishop and Mildred Smoot Bishop of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

Jerry served his country in the United States Navy aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Palau. After his service he moved back to Tuscaloosa, where his family then lived, and attained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from the University of Alabama. He met Mary Virginia Threadgill and they were married on March 28, 1957. They lived happily for 52 years. He went to work for State Farm Insurance Company and moved to West Monroe in 1969. He attained the professional designation of CPCU and, at the time of his retirement after 38 years of service, was the underwriting superintendent of the State of Arkansas.

Jerry lived a simple life always content with staying in the background and never wanting the spotlight on himself. He went to bed early and was early to rise, working hard everyday. He always believed that if a man didn't teach his children to work hard, he had failed as a parent. Having come through the great depression, Jerry understood lean times and through those times he learned the value of hard work. He never expected anything to be given to him and taught his children those values. All who knew him would agree that Jerry possessed the calmest demeanor, very rarely was he ever angry. Until his last day on earth he was a loving husband, a devoted father, proud grandfather, and a good friend.

Survivors include; his wife of 52 years, Mrs. Mary Virginia Bishop, Sons, Wade Bishop and wife Kay , Andy Bishop all of West Monroe, La, and Mike Bishop of Atlanta, GA; Grandchildren, Ashley, Jason, Chris, Michael Patrick all of West Monroe, LA; Sister, Mrs. Mary Norma Morton and husband, Max; Brother-in-law, Bill Threadgill and wife, Kathleen and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers will be Jason Bishop, Chris Bishop, Ray Williams, Wayne Heckford, Billy Bell, and Craig Kolb. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Carter, Michael Patrick Bishop, Jeff Wolf and the Coffee Group Members of Drennan's Medicine Chest.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday at Mulhearn Funeral Home in West Monroe.

Memorials may be made to the McClendon Baptist Church Children's Building Fund.
