Civil War Union Major General. He graduated from the US Military Academy West Point, in 1846 and was commissioned Second Lieutenant assigned to the 4th U.S. Artillery. During the Mexican-American War, he was action at the Battle of Buena Vista in 1847 and also participated in the Seminole Wars, (1849-50). Couch resigned his commission in the US Army in 1855 and was a merchant in New York City. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army and was appointed Colonel in command of the 7th Massachusetts Infantry on June 15, 1861. In August 1861, he was promoted Brigadier General in command in of the Army of the Potomac's II Corps. He led his corps in actions at Seven Pines, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville and his corps joined Federal forces in pursuing General Robert E Lee after the Battle of Gettysburg. Promoted Major General he commanded a division in the XXIII Corps of the Army of Ohio in the Nashville Campaign and finished his war service after the Carolinas Campaign in 1865. After the war, he briefly served as president of a mining company in West Virginia, then moved to Connecticut 1871, where he served as the Quartermaster General and Adjutant General for the Connecticut State Militia until 1884.
