Ensign A. R. Houghton, USNRF, was designated Naval Aviator #859 (lighter-than-air) in 1918. Accepted a USN commission in 1921.

Lieut. Houghton, USN, was killed in the destruction of the Navy dirigible U.S.S. SHENANDOAH (ZR-1) at Ava (an unincorporated community in northwestern Noble Township), Ohio. He was the only officer killed not to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Funeral held on 08 Sept. 1925 at Saint Paul's Cathedral, Boston.
