Motion Picture Director, Screenwriter. He directed nearly fifty feature films from the mid-1940s into the 1980s. He is best known to many for the war pictures "The Longest Day" (1962) and "Battle of the Bulge" (1965). Born in Yorkshire, England, he worked as a journalist before he embarked upon a career in the cinema. He started out as a cameraman's assistant and an assistant director before making his directing debut in 1947 with the film "Holiday Camp." Among his other memorable credits are "Miranda" (1948), "The Seekers" (1954), "Across the Bridge" (1957), "Swiss Family Robinson" (1960), "Very Important Person" (1961), "The Fast Lady" (1963), "The Biggest Bundle of Them All" (1968) and "Call of the Wild" (1972). He received an Academy Award nomination for his script contribution of the film "Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines" (1965). He died from complications following a heart attack and stroke he suffered two month earlier.
