United States Navy Admiral. Born in Washington, D.C., the son of the United States Ambassador to Sweden, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in 1868 and made the United States Navy his career for almost 50 years. He served with distinction during the Spanish-American War (1898), as Naval Governor of Guam (1900 to 1903), Chief Intelligence Officer of the Navy (1903 to 1906) and Commander of the Atlantic Fleet (1909). Schroeder retired in 1911, but was recalled to active duty the following year and was a naval advisor during World War I (WWI). He died at the Washington, D.C. Naval Hospital. In 1942, the destroyer "USS Schroeder" (DD-501) was named in his honor.
