Robert W. "Dutch" Shults Jr., 88, of Boerne passed away Sunday February 1, 2009 at the V.A. Hospital in Kerrville, TX. Dutch enlisted in the United States Air Force on the 6th of December, 1941 which began his decorated military career. His endeavors in the U.S.A.F. included his being a flight engineer working with B-52s, B-17s, and B-29s as well as conducting operations as a flight line supervisor preparing bombers for their next engagements. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Vietnam Campaign Ribbon, North Africa Campaign Ribbon, Air Medal, Korean Press Unit Citation, Japan Occupation Medal, Korean Service Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He retired from the military and was honorably discharged from service on October 31, 1972. In his time away from his military career he enjoyed the simple life and hobbies of golf, hunting, and fishing. He was also a certified gemologist. He was preceded in death by his father Robert William Shults Sr., mother Katherine Shults, and a sister Jewel. He is survived by his wife Willoa Shults, two daughters Vicki Smith, and Willedra and her husband Paul Garcia. He is also survived by four sons; Dale Shults and his wife Karen, Tommy Shults and his wife Dora, Duncan A. Potthoff and his wife Lori, and Donald A. Potthoff and his wife Karen. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A memorial service is set for Friday February 6, 2009 at 10:00 am at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home with a future service to be held at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, TX.
