Levi was the son of David HUFFORD (b. in Maryland) and Elizabeth RUSSELL. He was the grandson of Christian Hoffart II, and great-grandson of Christian Hoffart who was born 1716 in Schwaigern, Germany.
Levi's mother died when he was seven years old. After her death, he and his younger sister, Eliza, were indentured to a family named MOWL (perhaps Solomon Mowl). Levi and his sister moved to Stark County, Ohio, with the Mowl family. He returned to Washington County, Pennsylvania, when he was 21, in about 1837. Levi married Hannah SMITH on March 30, 1843. Nine sons were born to the union: David, George, James, William, Dennis, Levi, Alvin, John, and Milton.

He acquired land from his in-laws, cleared the land and farmed. He built a cabin and later a house, where he and his wife raised their children. He once broke both of his legs below his knees; he removed the splints so that he could keep working. As a consequence, his legs did not heal correctly, and he was "knock-kneed" for the rest of his life. Levi was still able to chop wood until the last days of his life.
