Lieutenant M. H. Esterly, USNRF, was born in the Youngstown suburb of Columbiana, Ohio, and designated Naval Aviator #2110 (heavier-than-air) in 1919. He had enlisted in the Navy in 1912 and had previous experience with lighter-than-air craft, transferring to the Naval Reserve Flying Corps in 1916.

Died as a result of the explosion of the dirigible ZR-2 (British designation R-38). LT Esterly was married to the former Miss Martha E. Ramsey (1895-1951) and left sons Marcus Jr. (1916-1979), DeWitt C. R. (1918-1969) and daughter Mrs. Nancy Jane Herndon, 1920-2001).

Funeral and burial service took place on Sept. 24, 1921.
