He was born in Louisville, Ky., to Robert M. and Cristine Starnes Allen.
He moved with his family to Ashland County as a very young child. He spent 22 years in service to his country, six years in the United States Navy and 16 years in the Ohio National Guard. He was called to active duty during Desert Storm.
He was a tool and die maker. For 14 years he was employed at F.E. Myers Co. He then went to the Ashland Timken Plant. He was last employed by Ashland Precision Tooling and retired in 2006.
He attended Polk United Methodist Church. He was a member of Ashland Eagles Club and a lifetime member of the VFW Ashland Post 1067.
For 43 years, he served as an EMT and volunteer fireman of the Polk Fire Department.
Gary never met a stranger. He enjoyed fishing and golf and deeply loved his family and grandkids.
On Oct. 25, 1975, he married Janice R. Hyde, who survives. Also surviving are their beloved children, Melissa Allen of Mount Vernon, William (Terri) Yeley of Ashland, Steven (Chris) Yeley of Savannah and Shawn Allen of Arizona; four grandsons, Nicholas Yeley, Colton Zeigler, Bryndon Allen and Aaron Allen; his mother, Cristine Allen of Polk; and two sisters, Barbara Bee of Polk and Doreen (John) Park of Ashland.
