A native of Lilesville in Anson County, Mrs. Allen was born on June 30, 1903, the daughter of the late John Augustus and Annie Eliza Clark Dabbs. After finishing high school, she attended East Carolina Teachers College. She later returned to Carthage to help her father in his business. She married Joseph "Joe" Hugh Allen in 1936, and worked with him in his Carthage drug store, Allen's Sundry, until their daughter, Sara Jo Allen, was born in 1940. She stayed home with her daughter until she reached school age, and then she returned to work with her husband at their store.

Later, Mrs. Allen used her teacher training and opened a kindergarten in her church. She and her husband soon had a room built on the back of their house where she continued her kindergarten for many years. Her last class was held the year before North Carolina began the state's kindergarten program.

Mrs. Allen volunteered much time at her church, First Baptist Church of Carthage, where she was the oldest living member. She was also a founding member of the Carthage Garden Club. In 1988, she and her husband moved to Penick Retirement Home in Southern Pines.
