Motion Picture Director. Born Samuel Grosvenor Wood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, he began his career on the staff of Cecil B. De Mille as an assistant director in 1915. He made his debut as a solo director for the film "City Sparrow" (1920) and went on to a long association with MGM in 1927. His many credits included "A Night at the Opera" (1935), "A Day at the Races" (1937), "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1939), as a co-director for "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), "Kitty Foyle" (1940) and "Pride of the Yankees" (1942).
