Dr. A.M. Butts was born in Hagarville, Arkansas. Educated in Boom County, Ark., as far as high school. Vanderbilt University and graduated in 1890. Matriculated in Medical Department for Medical Course. Graduated there in 1895. The Winter of 1901 was spent in New Orleans, attending the post-graduate courses at the Tulane University. Went to Alma, Ark., and practiced medicine until 1902, coming to Holdenville, March 22, of the same year. He first located in the Rialto building where the Court House now stands, and hung his little shingle on his door, "Dr. A.M. Butts." Five years practicing to every worthy call, without the convenience of an automobile. Ride a mule, drive a buggy or walk. He now has the honor of owning the second automobile in Holdenville. In 1908 he accepted an appointment from Gov. Haskell for State Board of Medical Examiners, holding one of the most important positions on the Board, thereby gaining the confidence of all the physicians of the State. Resigned from the Board in 1911 because the pay was not sufficient to maintain his family. On resignation from this Board, Dr. Butts made two resolutions, "First, to Do Right By All," and second "To Save Money." He has done both. Elected School Board Member served four years from 1908. In 1911 he built five apartment houses which will accommodate about fifty families, when no one else thought it a good venture. Has kept building until 1920. Every apartment is kept strictly up to the minute, outside and in. For years has been Chairman of the Civic Committee of the Chamber of Commerce and it has been his custom to give personally, prizes on flowers. He is a charter member of the Rotary club, and has a 100% record of attendance, always being active as the Chairman of the Industrial Committee. At this time Dr. Butts was forced on the School Board, because of his untiring interest and is still serving. At the last election of the Chamber of Commerce of Holdenville, that body elected him president for the coming year.
