He retired from the Detroit Police Department in 1993 after 25 years of service, he worked was a patrol officer.
He served in the United States Navy aboard Fletcher Class destroyers. In the Navy he was a boiler operator and a machinist mate second class.
After serving in the Navy he worked as a boiler operator for the Detroit Board of Education.
Mr. Bender was a Civil War buff who also enjoyed aviation related topics.
He enjoyed reading.
Mr. Bender is survived by his wife Carol,who he married in 1961.
His loving daughter Elyse and her husband Joseph Pielack.
His was blessed with four grandchildren, Faith, Grace, Joy and Joseph Pielack.
His is also survived by a brother Alfred and his wife Martha Bender.
Mr. Bender is also survived by a brother in law Edward Kenny and many neices and nephews.
He was predecased by his parents Alfred and Lydia Bender, also a sister Phyllis Kenny.
Visitation will be held at the S. K. Schultz Funeral Home 21705 Gratiot at 8 1/2 Mile Road in Eastpointe on Wednesday from 1:00 until 9:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home on Thursday morning at 10:00 am.
Interment will be at Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia.
