Arthur Hancock, Captain USCG Retired, 87, of Williamsburg, passed away at the Williamsburg Hospice House on April 2, 2009, after a brief illness.
Art was born November 29, 1921 in Chicago, IL to Robert John Hancock and Clara Louise Eddy. Art grew up in Los Angeles, CA. He attended Los Angeles City College, and UCLA before entering the U. S. Coast Guard Academy in 1940. He graduated with his class, the Class of '44, in 1943, the course having been shortened due to WWII.
In 1947 Art entered Naval Flight Training in Pensacola, FL, and became a designated Naval Aviator. He was assigned to the Coast Guard Air Station at Salem, MA. It was here that he met Sally Ann Morgan, a Registered Nurse and a Salem Massachusetts Hospital graduate. They were married in 1948.
In November 1955 Art returned to Pensacola and was qualified as a Helicopter Pilot. His assignments took him throughout the coastal United States, the Great Lakes, Midway Island, and Argentia, Newfoundland. Included were tours as Chief of Personal, 5th CG District, Portsmouth VA; Commanding Officer CG Cutter BIBB out of Boston, MA; Captain of the Port of Hampton Roads, and Group Commander Norfolk, VA; and Commanding Officer, Reserve Training Center, Yorktown, VA. Art retired in 1972 with 30 years of service to his country. His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal.
In retirement Art and Sally moved to Brewster, MA where they rehabilitated a colonial farmhouse. When Art wasn't covered in sanding dust he was active in civic affairs and the Orleans Coffee Club.
Art and Sally moved to Williamsburg in the spring of 1979 where they became members of Bruton Parish Church. Art was active in community affairs and a long time member and past President of the Middle Plantation Club.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sally; his son, Arthur "Skip" Hancock, Jr. and his wife Lucy, of Hingham, MA; his daughter, Susan Hancock Tucker and her husband Larry, of El Dorado, AR; 5 grandchildren: Amanda, Charlie, Emily, Patricia, and William; and 2 great grandchildren: Luke and Lillian.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at Bruton Parish Church, 331 Duke of Gloucester St., Williamsburg, VA. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date to be determined.
