Mildred Aileen Baker, 101 years of age, passed away, August 27, 2006 in Holdrege, Nebraska. Mildred was born June 16, 1905 at Holdrege, the eldest of four daughters of Clarence and Minnie (Lundberg) Brooks. She received her primary education in rural Phelps County and graduated from Holdrege High School with the class of 1922. Mildred received her normal training and began to teach school in rural Phelps County. On September 28, 1928 she was united in marriage to Claire C. Baker and to this union two children were born: Richard and Janet. The family made their home in Holdrege, where Mildred focused on raising their children and their home was always open to family and friends. She also worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Pennys in Holdrege for thirty-four years until her retirement. On February 28, 1975 she was preceded in death by her husband, Claire.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege, where she taught Sunday school and active with church circle, member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Eastern Star. Her hobbies were needlework, gardening and baking.

She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Janet and husband, Dr. Ronald Stevens of Holdrege; daughter-in-law, Joan Baker of Breckenridge, Colorado; four grandchildren: Laurie Horak and her husband, Mike of Bellevue, Nebraska, Mary Pumphrey and her husband, Dave of Macedonia, Iowa, Teri O'Glee and her husband, Scott of Austin, Texas and Jay Baker and his wife, Katie of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; nine great-grandchildren: Matthew Horak and his wife, Kathy of Vermillion, South Dakota, Stephanie Horak of New Orleans, LA, Gabriel Newill of Hawthorne, Florida, Jarred Newill of Ames, Iowa, Eva Newill of Manhattan, Kansas, Eddie Pumphrey of Macedonia, Iowa, Richard O'Glee and Michael O'Glee both of Fort Worth, Texas and Brian Baker of Pittsburgh, PA; sister, Norma Anderson of Holdrege; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard in 2001; two sisters: Grace Nelson and her husband, Reuben and Lois Gibbs and her husband, Lindsey.
