William Knight was born about 1797 in Orange County, North Carolina to John and Mary (Carrington) Knight. William's family (parents) moved to Jasper County, GA about 1802. During the War of 1812, William served as private in the US Army under Capt John S. Goodwyn. On May 17, 1815, he was discharged at Camp Green, Charlotte, NC at age 19. On Jun 5, 1819, William married Catherine Nelson in Jasper County, GA. In the 1820 US census, they were recorded residing in or near Monticello, Jasper County, GA. Sometime between 1820 and 1824, William and Catherine moved to Barbour Co AL. In 1824, Catherine died a few months after giving birth to their last child, a son, Harbirt S. C. "Hob" Knight. She is buried at Blue Springs River of Life Cemetery in Clio, Barbour, AL
They had the following children:

Mary Ann Magdalen Silva Knight Helms (1820–1853)
Nathaniel Knight 1822–
Harbirt(Harbert) S. C. "Hob" Knight (1824–1879)

William remarried Mary A. (maiden name unknown) about 1828 probably in Barbour Co. AL. In 1850 the family was residing in Division 23, Barbour County, AL. They had the following children:

William J. Knight (1829–1894)
John Alexander Knight (1831–1863)
Winfield Scott Knight (1838–1863)

In 1880, William was living with his son, William J. Knight and his wife Angeline (Snow) Knight in Atkinson, Barbour, Alabama. He died in April, 1882 and is buried in Blue Springs River of Life Cemetery in Clio, Barbour County, AL.
