Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. In the Civil War, he served as a Colonel in command of the 12th Colored Regiment during the Mississippi and Tennessee campaigns. For his actions at the battles of Cheatham and Nashville resulting in the capture and surrender of 4,462 Confederate prisoners, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers in March 1865.
