Edward Stuart Eby, 73, of Waterford passed away February 14, 2008 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends. The son of Russell and Dorothy (Caplan) Eby, Ed was born October 3, 1934, in Chicago, IL. He left high school at age 16 to attend college at the University of Chicago. He received a B.S. ('56), M.S. ('57), and Ph.D. ('64) in Mathematics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ed spent much of his career as a civilian employee of the Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London. He taught and mentored many co-workers, retiring in 1989 as a Research Mathematician. He was awarded the Order of the Decibel, the highest award in the field of Underwater Acoustics, for his contributions to its theory, applications, and practice. He was a Life Member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and an Emeritus Member of the Mathematical Association of America. Ed was an active member of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite and York Rite Masonry, and was past Master of Cosmopolitan Lodge No. 125 of New Haven. As a member of the Boy Scouts of America, Ed achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and earned the Order of the Arrow. Ed belonged to Temple Emanuel. He was also an amateur radio operator. Ed leaves his wife Dorothy (Heiferman) Eby of Waterford; his children, Judith Levin and her husband Neal Beroz of Albuquerque, NM, Russell Levin and his wife Diane of Forest Hills, NY, and Gail Johnson and her husband David of Salem, CT; and his grandchildren, Andrew and Alex Johnson and Rory Levin. His sisters, Emily Rubino of Streamwood, IL, and Joanne (Ken) Kapps of Mt. Prospect, IL, also survive him. Graveside funeral services will be held at Waldheim Cemetery in Forest Park, IL. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to Connecticut Hospice, 100 Double Beach Road, Branford, CT 06405 or Shiners' Hospitals for Children, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
