Levi M. Bates is a War of 1812 Veteran of the Battle of Plattsburg.
1855 US Bounty Land Grant signed by President James Buchanon: Bates, Huldah, Aged 66, New Haven, widow of Levi Bates, private in Capt. James Talcott's Company, Vermont Militia. He volunteered at Williston, September 9, 1814, for the defense of Plattsburgh, served four days, and was discharged there, September 12, 1814, having taken part in the battle of September 11. He was married to Huldah Graves at Richmond, September 3, 1810, by Abel Cooper, J. P., and died there March 21, 1827. [No public or private record of the marriage in existence till now]. Raised large family of children. Application made August 21, 1855. Widow granted 160 acres of land near Sioux City Iowa. Witnesses, Levi Rockwood and Watson C. Washburn, of New Haven, Justice Jonathan Hough, James Talcott, Elisha Wright, Justice William Weston. [Helda was in New Haven, Vermont when she received the Bounty Land grant.]
