Don was born in Kentucky. His family moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where his father was a minister. In 1961, the family moved to NC where Don finished high school. He graduated from Mars Hill College with a BS degree in Chemistry. He taught high school Chemistry for a number of years. Later he formed his own real estate company. He was a member of the NC Board of Realtors, the McDowell County Board of Realtors and the McDowell Chamber of Commerce. Don was a member of Clinchfield Baptist Church. He married the former Anita Justice and they had two children, Don and Brigette and two grandchildren, Elora Collins and Ryan Shimberg. Preceding him in death were is parents Rev. Roy O Collins Sr and Maude Frye Collins. Also, one grandson Matthew Tyler Shimberg.
