Beloved Mother Grandmother and Great Grandmother. Grandma was born in a small farm house on the family farm in a very very small Missouri town called Arroll. Grandmas father Harley rode horseback for about six miles into Summerville to get the doctor for her birth.The doctor arrived just in time. All thats left now of that house is the foundation.
Marie was raised in a very poor but loving family. The house that she was born and raised in was built in the early 1920s by her Grandfather Frank Toll as a wedding present for her parents. The house had no electricity or plumbing. The house had four large rooms with two outside doors in each room. The outside of the house was covered with wood siding,and the inside was covered with pasted on newspapers to keep the cold out. It also had a picket fence that went around the house. They had a well, barn, chicken coop, rabbit hutch and out house. Water was pumped from the well into buckets and brought into the house for drinking,bathing,and cooking. Around christmas time they had a Christmas tree, but sometimes no presents. Her mother would make soap out of lye and talon. They couldnt afford laundry soap. Grandma Maries family lived on what her father brought home after hunting and what little the farm would produce. This was during the great depression.
She attended a one room school in Arroll,and Samuel Gompers junior high and Fremont high in Los Angeles. Grandpa went there at the same time but they didn't meet until 1947,a few years after.
Grandma traveled out to California with her family in 1936 after her father harley decided to move because it was in the middle of the depression, and providing food on the table was hard. Wild game was becoming scarce so he sold the family farm for a 1928 chevy and $190.00. They moved to Los Angeles with 2 huge trunks, some belongings, a grandmother ( Grandma Brooks),six kids and her parents.
She loved to go fishing with her dad. Grandma would say that when her dad got up before sunrise to go fishing,he would sneak into her room that she shared with her sisters,and he would wake her up and tell her to be ready within minutes and if she wasnt ready in time he would be gone. Her father was a man of his word.
She was married to Raymond Louis Turner in April 1948 in L.A. California. She was the Mother to Danny Ray, Michael Eugene, Donna, Carol Ann , Charles and baby Dennis who only lived for one day and died in 1951. Grandma Marie was a very dedicated mother , grandmother and great grandmother.
