Veteran Advertising Man Dies Suddenly

C. Richard Baxter, 69, longtime advertising department salesman for the Union-Bulletin, died Tuesday evening at his home 1321 Isaacs, following a brief illness.
Baxter was born March 17, 1901, on the Touchet River homestead of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James E. Baxter, later farmed by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John A. Baxter. His parents died a number of years ago, his father having been engaged here in the real estate business.
Baxter was first employed by the Moring Union as an advertising salesman Sept. 7, 1922. He had graduated from Wa-Hi and attended the University of Washington where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. He later joined the staff of the Evening Bulletin and had 47 years of continuous employment on the local newspapers when he retired Nov. 14, 1969.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Charlotte Loney Baxter of the home; a son, John Harvey Baxter and a daughter, Mrs. Robert (Betty Jo) McGregor, both of Aberdeen; and six grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Baxter were married Dec 15, 1962, in Pasco.
Active in sports both as a track participant and a spectator in later years, he as a member of original Walla Walla Booster club which initiated planning for Borleske Stadium. He was a longtime member of the YMCA.
A member of the Elks Lodge here he receive his 25-year membership pin in the order last February. He was a member of its cooks and waiters committee. In earlier years he sang in the Elks Chorus and with the city-wide Chorales. He served as a member of the Chamber of Commerce aviation committee and was a member of the Wagon Wheelers.
