Uriah Collins was born in Russell County, KY in 1858. He taught in country schools there as a young man. In 1880 he came to Collin County, Texas and lived with and worked for Dr. William D. Lair, a state senator. Dr. Lair had come to Texas from Russell County in 1857 and was from the Mount Vernon Baptist church there. Several of the Collins clan came to Texas at about the same time. Uriah then taught school in Van Alstyne. Dr. Lair appointed him to attend Sam Houston Normal in Huntsville beginning Fall of 1881. He graduated in 1884. While in school at Sam Houston Normal, he met his wife-to-be, Ida Barber. He taught school in Murphyville (now Alpine) and Eagle Pass. In 1887, he completed law school at the Univ. of Texas. He practiced law a short time in Clarendon. He and Ida were married Valentine's Day 1889 at Marble Falls where he worked as superintendent at a tannery and shoe factory. They were married in the home of Ida's sister, Margaret Badger. He was ordained as a deacon in the Baptist church in Marble Falls. Children Ralph, Robert and Mary were born in Marble Falls. In about 1893 the young family moved to Vernon Texas where he served as the principal of the high school. There Ida Jane was born. Next they moved to Itasca where he served as principal (or superintendent). Samuel Posey was born in Itasca in 1897 and died later the same year. In 1898 Ida Barber's brother, Moses, died. Moses his father Stillman lived on a 5000 farm in Fisher County Texas on the Clear Fork of the Brazos River in Fisher Texas, north of Roby. The death of Moses is probably the reason that Uriah and family moved to Fisher. Uriah and his boys moved in the summer of 1898. Ida and the girls moved in the fall of the same year, and Susie was born in November. Buell Posey was born in 1900. In 1910 the family moved to Abilene to provide better educational opportunities for the children. Five completed bachelor's degrees at what is now Hardin-Simmons University. In 1928 Uriah, Ida and son Ralph moved to Hidalgo County near Alamo, TX and planted a 20 acre citrus orchard. Ida died there in 1933. Uriah moved to Abilene in 1945 to live with his daughter, Mary. In 1955, they built a house and moved next door to Mary's sister, Susie, in Alvin, Texas.
Uriah was very active in his local church and served in the local Baptist association wherever he lived. He was a deacon, Sunday School teacher and superintendent. He served for many years as a trustee at Hardin-Simmons Univ. He had a part in five church building programs. He died in 1960. He was mentally sharp and walked "under his own power" until his death at the age of 101 and 9 months.
