John Wayne Gill Sr., age 59, a 24-year resident of Mary Esther, Fla., passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at his home after an extended illness, with his loving family near. He was born on May 29, 1949, in Memphis, Tenn., to Earnest and Virginia Gill. During his early years he was raised by his grandmother, Addie Bailey, and his uncle, Edgar Sing. John honorably served his country in the U.S. Army, having joined during the Vietnam conflict. Many of the area residents may know him as John Wayne who owned the Indoor Gun Range on Beal Parkway for many years. He was a loving husband, father and friend, who will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. John was preceded in death by his parents; grandmother; and uncle. Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Anita Gill; and his children, Melody May Gill and John Wayne Gill Jr. Local funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 29, at 2 p.m. at McLaughlin Mortuary Chapel with family and friends officiating. Following services, John will return to his birthplace in Memphis, Tenn., for burial services. In lieu of flowers, a special memorial account has been set up at the First National Bank in John's name. McLaughlin Mortuary, 17 Chestnut Ave. S.E., Fort Walton Beach, Fla., is entrusted with the arrangements. Arrangements in Memphis, Tenn. will be handled by Family Funeral Care.
