Born in Morganton, North Carolina, Charles enlisted in the US Army at a young age. He was a motorcycle courier for Headquarters Company, 60th Artillery CAC (Coast Artillery Corps.) In September of 1918, his unit participated in the St Mihiel Offensive in France. He was reported killed in action to his family. Charles' father died in October 1918 believing that his son had died in France.
On April 2, 1919, not long after returning from France, Charles married Mattie Wade in Granite Falls. They lived in Stanley until it became difficult to find work. In the summer of 1937, they moved to California where Charles found work as a house painter.
On August 13, 1938, Charles fell 20 feet when the scaffold he was working on collapsed. His left thigh was fractured. His leg had not healed by December, so the decision was made to surgically repair the fracture. He died on Christmas Eve of complications from the surgery.
