Gilbert A. Abney was the son of Elisha and Eliza (Dempsy)Abley; brother of Rachel, Hannah, Permelia, William C., and Eldora. On October 11, 1896, he married Bertha Josephine Pratt, daughter of Joseph Pratt and Sarah Barlett.
In the 1900 census, Gilbert and Bertha were living with his parents at Union, Calhoun, Iowa. They had a son, Lyle T., 1 yr. old.
In the Homesteader, a Des Moines,Iowa newspaper, Gilbert's name was mentioned several times; on February 1, 1900, A. G. Abney of Lohrville, Iowa raises and breeds Galloway cattle. Ads of cattle and horses for sale belonging to A. G. Abney of North Loup, Nebraska started in 1907; He was the proprietor of one of the strong thoroughbred Galloway herds of the West. He also raised purebred horses - Belgians and Percherons.
