Silas Samuel Cook, 79, of 344 Old Hickory Lane, Chatham, died Saturday, February 21, 2009 at his residence.

Born November 7, 1929 in Providence, N.C., he was the son of the late Sam Sanford Cook and Rosa Durham Cook.

He had lived his entire life in the Danville area and was married to LaFern Marie Cook, who survives. He had worked as a loom fixer for Dan River, Inc. for 40 years and as a guard at DCC for 13 years. He was a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Korean War. He had been in declining health since Christmas Day of 2007 when he suffered a stroke. He was of the Holiness faith.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Stacey Cook, and two daughters, Jeanette Cook and Cindy Cook Blackwell, all of Marion; three brothers, Richard Cook of Pelham, Garland Cook of Providence, and Aubrey Cook of Burlington, NC; three sisters, Barbara F. Wray and Catherine B. Bean of Providence and Martha A. Riggs of Mebane, NC; two stepsons, Robert Davis and Paul Davis of Danville; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Craft of Chatham, and Jo Ann Vazques of Chapel Hill, NC; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was prede-ceased by a son, Allen Cook, one brother, Calvin D. Cook and three sisters, Mildred S. Gennell, Lois P. Turner and Marie E. Britt.

Graveside service for Mr. Cook will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Daryl Joyce officiating. Interment will be in Danville Memorial Gardens with military honors to be given by the American Legion Dan River Post 1097.
