~MY ANCESTOR~
The son of CAPT. JOHN & DESIRE (HOWLAND) GORHAM, Jabez Gorham married HANNAH (STURGIS) GRAY, widow of John Gray, on 8 Apr 1677 in Yarmouth, Mass. This information is from "in the Pennsylvania, Society of Mayflower Descendants Applications, 1911-1929".

The family removed from Barnstable to Bristol, Rhode Island. He was present at the first town meeting in Bristol where he was voted as an inhabitant, can be found in the 1689 Bristol Census, and on July 6, 1696, he became a member of the Congregational Church of Bristol.

Jabez was a yeoman. His will was dated March 16, 1724/5 of Bristol. His wife, Hannah, is named as well as "eldest son Jabez Gorham"; also sons Isaac, Joseph & Benjamin; daughter, Elizabeth wife of Shobael Baxter; and grandsons, Edward, William & Samuel Downs. Hannah & son, Benjamin, were named executors. He died between the date of his will and May 18, 1725, when his son, ISAAC GORHAM, of the New Haven Colony of Conn. gave a receipt of his portion of the estate of his father.
