J.R. Stockard was born in the Moores Chapel community, to Thomas Jefferson and Mary Ann Carr Stockard. In 1910, his mother, a widow, sold out and moved to Henderson, Tennessee in order for her children to attend what is now Freed-Hardeman University. She sent her son, called J.R., back to Milan to bring a cow to Henderson. He walked the cow all the way. A farmer along the way let him spend the night, and the next day, J.R. walked the cow the rest of the way to Henderson. He completed his education and preached the gospel for the Churches of Christ for many years, before he passed away at age 101. He and his wife had been married 50 years the day she passed away, and they had no children.

(Documents show Milan as his birthplace, as it was the nearest town, and Moores Chapel community was on a Milan postal route. The family is found to be living in Civil Dist 12, and that is the district Moores Chapel is in)
