Ramona Arla Opheim Cherland was born on a farm near Hills, Minnesota on December 11, 1919, to Othilda Severtson Opheim and Henrik Opheim. She was baptized in December 1919 and confirmed in her faith in July 1934. As class valedictorian she graduated from Hills High School in 1937 and from Augustana Lutheran College, Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1941. She taught school at Ramona and Harrisburg, South Dakota and in Albert Lea, Minnesota.

Together they served in Lutheran Churches at: Cass Lake, Minn., First Evangelical, Karlstad, Minn., Our Saviour’s, Winnipeg, Man.; Trinity, Estevan, Sask.; and Trinity, Calgary, Alta. Everyone was welcome in her home. In her partnership in the parish Ramona served in many capacities providing support and leadership. She prayed constantly for the church and took great comfort in her childrens’ continuing involvement in it.

All her life Ramona loved music, seeing it a means to worship God. She taught piano, voice, various instruments and conducted choirs for children and adults in each of the communities where she lived. She took every opportunity she had to share with others the beauty of worshipping God through music.

Ramona died on December 29, 1983, at the University Hospital, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, at 64 years of age. She was predeceased by her husband, Clarence, on July 21, 1978, her father Henrik Opheim in July 1959 and her mother, Othilda, in April 1977.

Love God - Love Neighbor as Self

And He (Jesus) said to them all
If any man will come after me
Let him deny himself
