The Rev. Clarence Cherland was the son of Carl and Kate Halligan Cherland. He was a graduate of Blue Earth High School; Luther College, Decorah, IA; Luther Seminary, St. Paul, MN and Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, IA.

Clarence married Ramona Opheim and they had five children: Henrik, Carl, Ruth, Esther, and Susan. They served Lutheran churches for 33 years in Minnesota and Canada: Trinity, Cass Lake, Minnesota; First Evangelical, Karlstad, Minnesota; Our Saviour's, Winnipeg, Manitoba; Trinity, Estevan, Saskatchewan; Trinity, Calgary, Alberta. Clarence also served on the boards of Canadian Lutheran World Relief and Luther College most of those years.

He is survived by: wife Ramona; sons Henrik and Carl; daughters, Esther, Susan and Ruth (Hilderman); grandchildren Kara and Joel Cherland; Matthew and Nathan Hilderman; brothers Carroll, Wayne, Milton and Richard; and sisters Alvina Kallestad and Kathleen Sohn.

Funeral services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church, Calgary, Alberta, Canada on Tuesday, July 25, 1978 and Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Hills, Minnesota on Thursday, July 27, 1978. Pastor Cherland will be interred at Flowerfield Cemetery, Hills, Minnesota.
