Darrell Clifford Burns, a former Navy Seal who was the first disc jockey for local KMPG radio, Sunday. He was 68. Mr. Burns was born in Modesto and was raised in Hollister for most of his life. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as a U.S. Navy Seal. Mr. Burns was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Texas Lodge #46 of San Juan Bautista and the Magnolia D.E.S. of Gilroy. When Mr. Burns came out of the service he worked as a deputy clerk for San Benito County. He then became an interior decorator for Sears & Roebuck and later was a heavy equipment operator before he had a Coca Cola route. Mr. Burns became the first disc jockey of the local KMPG Radio Station when it originally opened. He then became a deputy Sheriff for Monterey County in the communications department. From 1965 to 1970 he was a Hollister police officer, leaving to become a private investigator. For 17 years until his retirement he had his own Electronics Company. Mr. Burns late parents were Clifford and Cleone Burns, known as Mom and Pop Burns, who ran Bolado Park for many years. Mr. Burns is survived by his wife Kathryn J. Burns of Hollister, son Darrell Kenneth Burns Jr. of Hollister, daughter Deborah Willard of Hollister, son Christopher Burns of Hollister, daughter Kathy Borg of Florida, daughter Melanie Spremich of Morgan Hill, sister Lola Brennan of Fresno, 13 grandchildren, one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements for cremation are under the direction of Grunnagle-Ament-Nelson Funeral Home and Crematory. A private memorial services is planned at their residence. Contributions are preferred to the San Benito Home Health Care.
