David Levi Callaway was the son of Elmore and Samantha Mariah Hodges Callaway, and the husband of Nancy Luvicy (Vicey) Jones Callaway. "Dave" or "Levy" and "Vicey" married 4 Dec 1880 in Bulloch Co GA. He was a preacher in the Primitive Baptist church, and was dedicated to God and his calling. The couple had the following children:
1. Ollie Jean Callaway (b. 01 Mar 1882; d. 06 Jan 1971; married John Brian Thrift)
2. Elminie Samantha Callaway (b. 27 Sep 1883; d. 11 Oct 1957; married 19 Jan 1902 to Willie Flemming [Goodge] DeLoach) (This writer's great-grandparents)
3. Benjamin Josiah Callaway (b. 09 Feb 1886; d. 11 Sep 1947; married in 1910 to Annie Lee Hall)
4. Nora Callaway (b. 18 Feb 1890; d. 08 Feb 1950; married 18 Feb 1909 to Lester Holland)
5. Isaac Jones Callaway (b. 21 Dec 1891; d. 16 Jul 1968; married 16 Oct 1913 to Agnes Waters)
6. William Elmore Callaway (b. 17 Dec 1893; d. 17 Apr 1932; married Martha Jane [Mattie] Deason)
7. Clifford Clyde Callaway (b. 02 Feb 1896; d. 19 Sep 1965; married Larue Barrow)
8. Sula Nancy Callaway (b. 24 Dec 1897; d. 05 May 1969; married Roach Nail)

Martha Eason Odum wrote her mother's version (Fannie DeLoach Eason) of Grandpa Callaway's last sermon. Fannie was one of the children of Elminie and Goodge DeLoach.

"Fannie walked the R&G Railroad track to Canoochee Church to hear a visiting preacher and Grandpa (Rev. Dave Callaway) preach. Grandpa followed the visiting preacher (i.e. he preached after the visiting preacher had finished), and preached his last sermon. He said he wanted to give everyone some advice. Everybody should live a life so that when it is your time to go, you will be ready. He said for him it was "late in the evening". He said the sun was almost down, but he was ready to go.

Several days later he preached at a Mrs. Burnside's funeral. One week after that, he was minding the calf for Grandma (Nancy Luvicy "Vicey") to milk the cow. (i.e. He was keeping the calf away from the cow so Grandma could milk the cow.) The calf came back to the cow, so Grandma looked around to see where Grandpa was. He was lying on the ground in front of the cow. He never moved. He had died of a heart attack.

Someone was passing with a load of logs. He stopped and helped Grandma with Grandpa.

Grandpa preached 25 years and never received a dime. He said to give it (any money) to the widows and orphans because he was able to work."
