Henry A.M. Beers enlisted and was mustered into service as a Private in Company F of the 9th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Hawkins Zouaves, on June 30th, 1861, at the age of 18 for two years service. He served with the regiment until May 6th, 1863, when he was transferred with upwards of 200 other members of the 9th Regiment (which regiment was being mustered out of service) to the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment to compelete their terms of service, having enlisted after the date of the organization of the regiment. He was honorably discharged from service with the 3rd Regiment on August 6th, 1863, and returned to New York City, New York.
On February 11th, 1864, he once again entered U.S. service enlisting and being mustered into service as a Private in Company H of the 5th New York Volunteer Heavy Artillery regiment at Brookylyn, New York, for three yeras service. He was captured in action on October 19th, 1864, being held as a prisoner of war. He was released sometime in 1865 and mustered out of service with the company on July 19th, 1865, at Harper's Ferry, Virginia.
After the war he returned to New York City, New York, and joined the New York National Guard. On Janaury 19th, 1874, he was elected as Second Lieutenant of Company B of the 1st Regiment of Infantry, Hawkins Zouaves, 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, New York National Guard. He served in the guard until May 11th, 1875, when he resigned his commission within the regiment at the expiration of his term of service.
