Frederick Bale enlisted alongside his brother Ernest as a private at San Francisco, California, June 13, 1898. Fred indicated he was 24 years old, born at Calistoga, and was a wine-maker. He was 5' 5" tall, with brown eyes, black hair, and a dark complexion. Private Bale was mustered into Battery L, 3rd U.S. Artillery. He was discharged at Malalos, Philippine Islands, August 4, 1899, and re-enlisted with assignment to Company A, 36th U.S. Volunteer Infantry. Private Bale died a few months later. His mother filed for a survivor's pension December 24, 1900, and received application No. 731,920 and certificate No. 616,602.
