James Arnold was born 9 Jul 1832 in Swallowclift, Wiltshire, England to James and Mary Corp Arnold. His father was an innkeeper and market gardner. He immigrated to USA in 1850 living in Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. He trained to be a stone mason.

He married Mary Ann Wheeler in Warren Co., IN on 22 Apr 1862. He then moved to Olmstead Co., MN.

This couple had the following children: Francis J., Charles U., Franklin William, George Ernest, Arthur Wesley, James Wallace, Alice Mary, and Earl Rule.

He served his community as Postmaster and Justice of the peace.

He died at his home on 14 Apr 1900. He is buried in Farm Hill Cemetery.
