He was born in Rhode Island on 15 Aug 1795 (Rhode Island Births, 1636-1930). Also, there is a veteran of the War of 1812 by the name of Gifford Mathewson buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Factoryville, Wyoming, PA. Apparently there is no headstone but there is (or was) a G.A.R. marker (Pennsylvania Veterans Burial Cards, 1777-1999). I'm not sure if these are the same person or not. It seems likely they could be because of the unusual name of Gifford, the right age and the close proximity of both cemeteries to Factoryville. - Pam Schwartz
