James was born in Arkansas to Thomas and Sarah Booth Haney. He married Annie A. Rice 13 January 1884 in Cherokee Co, TX. Their sons, Claud Byron Haney, Emory E. Haney and Sidney Albert Haney, are buried in Chambers Cemetery.

Palestine Daily Herald, 10 March 1936:
James T. HANEY, 76, died Tuesday at 2:45 a.m. at his home on the Boston Road, 3 miles southeast of Palestine, near the Swanson Hill School, He had been ill from pneumonia....

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife; One Daughter, Mrs. Minnie Stowe of Crockett; Three sons, Emory, Sid & Claude Haney, all of Anderson County. Two brothers, Will Haney of Alto, Henry Haney of Rusk; Three sisters, Mrs. Della Lanier of Alto, Mrs. Annie Banks of Rusk, and Mrs. Ada Linstrom of Jacksonville....
